I am enamoured with mother nature and in particular her flowers. Their shapes, colours, sizes, textures, smell – everything about them fills me with wonder and joy. This stunning, distinctly oriental Port Wine Magnolia captured my heart, and as I painted each petal & flower I was reminded of the humbling intricacies of mother nature.  This piece is created with oil paint on a gold leaf background and gold painted edges.

Did you know that Magnolias are believed to be the earliest known flowering plants, with their fossils dating back over 100 million years.  Magnolia trees even existed before bees, so they rely on beetles for pollination! Instead of nectar, the flowers produce large quantities of pollen that the beetles use for food.  Magnolia flowers are actually composed of “tepals”, a combination of sepals and petals similar in size and shape, comparable to water lilies.  The above info came from Suzy Nightingale-Journalist.  @fragrantmaven
